America is the land of the free and a place where people are allowed to pick any profession. Imagine an eighteen year old who is ready to become a doctor right now and is offered a job. Most would not even consider passing on a job like that. However, imagine if that same eighteen year old is told they must attend at least a year of college first. Why should anyone go through this similar problem when it can be prevented. Ever since 2006, athletes have been unable to make a choice to begin their profession and start their life dream a year early because of the stereotypes around society. We are losing talent to less prestigious and far away leagues because the young athletes simply need a paying job to support themselves and their family. European and amateur leagues allow these players to come and play for their teams and most of the time for pay. Some of these athletes are just heading into their prime when they are snatched from and sometimes are never to be seen again. Once they head over to overseas leagues they may eventually find a solid home there and not want to leave. Not only is the age rule scaring away potential NBA talent, but it is also flawed in its own ways. The age rule may require athletes to go to college, but these athletes are not dumb. There are athletes out there that will attend one full semester and do what they have to do for that semester. Only to drop out of school when their season is up(Kendrick 1). This not only harms the athletes education, but proves the age rule nearly useless. Why force someone to attend 1 semester to play basketball and have them drop out. It is of no benefit at all to the athletes and their future(Mcaleavey 287). This dilemma is one of the reasons this rule needs changed.
