The Debate on Paying College Athletes Colleges and Universities reported in 2017 of earning over 11 billion dollars of revenue. For some colleges, it was shown, they earned 100 million just from their school activities. Many students have told stories about how they only received seven dollars per meal. With this they were only able to purchase chips and condiments with their sandwiches. If they were to receive a higher amount of cash than that, it is deemed an NCAA violation. With all the money that executives earn yearly, and with these amateur players working their tails off to achieve their dreams, many believe they should be paid for their duties. So now after giving you just a few of the pros to rewarding athletes with money, I will tell you some of the cons. First off, there is always the thought of the irresponsibility and immaturity of kids these days. Many of the higher ups think that it will be spent on drugs and alcohol. Colin Herd, one of the most respected men in the sports business stated, “I don’t think paying all college athletes is great; not every college is loaded, and most 19-year-olds (are) gonna spend it—and let’s be honest, they’re gonna spend it on weed and kicks!” There’s simply no one to guide their financial decisions. There are multiple sports that do not get as much praise as do larger bases such as; football, basketball, and hockey. How would they compensate for the lesser known sports? Would they get paid the same as the more “important” sports athletes? In theory, would it not bring tension between two teammates where one makes a significant amount more than the other? Another negative to add to this perspective, is that they may start going to classes even less than they already do. They will not feel the attend and with this adding to the known events of where some of them do not do the work, but receive a decent grade at the same time. Furthermore, more so in the NBA, it has been shown that the “Pro-Mindset” seems to happen. This phenomenon, can be explained as only in it for the money. In college they are fighting for that right to the next level. Many more people enjoy college basketball more than the professional version because the will and heart of players just seems so much deeper.
