Question: Should NCAA Division 1 student athletes be payed? Specifically sports that draw a large amount of revenue to their University?
Moderator (Jorge) Good afternoon everyone, welcome to tonights debate. We will be discussing whether or not college athletes should be paid; specifically student athletes who participate in sports that draw a large amount of revenue to their school. Tonight we will have Richard Sherman, current Seattle Seahawk, and former Stanford football player. James Kinder, average civilian, attended college at University of Alabama. Lastly, we have Julia Anderson who works with college athletes and helps define their amateurism. First off I attended the University of Alabama which could be considered the biggest football school in the country. I was a regular in attending the games, however for students attendance was free. I do know that non-students attend the games as well, and have season tickets. In the sense of the revenue these schools are making off of their football teams, and players I do believe the student athlete should be payed.
Julia Anderson: The NCAA is designed for student athletes to be amateurs and to provide students with an education. It is not designed for them to be professional athletes before they get to that point in their career. In that case I do not think student athletes should be paid.
Richard Sherman: Being an NCAA student athlete, specifically a football player, I think student athletes should be compensated. You have hundreds of thousands of people paying to come and watch us play as well as big name television channels. The amount of revenue we give to the school does not add up to the amount they repay us.
