For years now there’s been controversy over the topic of Division 1 collegiate athletes providing all the labor with none of the reward.
The controversy started when athletes felt that their hard work was being used and abused.
Free labor is a heavily discussed topic when speaking on the topic of athletic stipends and compensation.
Athletic compensation is something that cannot be avoided forever and is something that the NCAA is already taking steps towards.
College athletes should be allowed compensation because of the unfairness in free labor, the creation of competition through compensation, and to expand range of athletes who are allowed stipends in some divisions.
Seemingly every person involved in college athletics gets annual pay except for the athletes.
The athletes are the people who actually generate the fan base

While on scholarship for Division 1 colleges most athletes get a full ride scholarship that covers the expenses of college. Even after top athletes drop out to train for their future, they are allowed to come back and finish if they wish. “Under NCAA rules, students may receive athletic aid for no more than five years in a six year period” (McCormack). “Many players in the NCAA’s top division do not finish in that time. But some students who come back for their degrees may qualify for NCAA grants or tuition assistance” (McCormack).
Some highly recruited athletes throughout the nation feel that they have performed well enough that they should be allowed pay for their play.
If athletes have the gift to draw an entire crowd into a stadium just to watch them play, then I don’t see why the NCAA shouldn’t reward these players or even these teams. “U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilkens ruled in favor of ‘effectively fixing the price student athletes could command from the most desirable schools”
