College is the place and time in a young adult’s life where skills are learned and perfected for one’s future career. During this time students are exposed to real world situations, such as working hard to make a name for themselves. Student athletes are no different; they work hard to become the best. “College athletics are rooted in the classical ideal of Mens sana in corpore sano—a sound mind in a sound body” (Branch para.8) College athletes help bring media attention and student enrollment into many universities. Both sides of the argument have strong compelling arguments. As a college student and former athlete I feel, college athletes should not get any monetary compensation other than education, and living. I shall concern myself with the economic side of paying athletes, moreover I will argue the privilege of playing college sports as well as how paying college athletes will ruin what college sports are. With the help of several resources I will be able to clearly define both sides of the argument and prove why my point of view makes the most sense. The sources I will use will give authority to my argument as well as prevent me from creating logical fallacies. To help me and my readers better understand the debate on whether or not college athletes should get paid I will use Taylor Branch’s The Shame of College Sports, and Paul Barrett’s Bad Sports articles. Both of these articles give plenty of background information on college athletics. Branch’s article goes in extent detail when explaining the rules and regulations of the NCAA.
