Pay For Play “Like pro football, college football has become a big business,” (Sommers 5). College athletics have become quite popular over the years.The games are highly profitable, and are broadcasted on network and cable TV. However, these athletes aren’t currently paid. But, players like Vince Young and Adrian Peterson have made it to the next level to receive payment, but there have also been athletes like Jason White that suffered gruesome injuries ending their athletic careers. Debate of whether college athletes should get paid has recently taken up sports news, and there are many reasons as to why either side of the debate is right. Athletes are the people that bring in the money for the NCAA. However, none of the pay goes to them. The NCAA recently signed an $11 billion settlement with CBS and Turner to host March Madness. 27 million watched the 2015 Men’s Basketball National Championship Game. The average ticket cost was $1,151.98 with an attendance of 143,387. The two coaches of the final two teams, Mike Krzyzewski and Bo Ryan, had a combined salary of $12,628,032 (Peebles). However, their players brought in the money, but none of it went to them, and they were the people that put on the show. Students in other activities are available for compensation, unlike athletes. Music students are able to perform for pay. Unlike athletes, they are not kicked out of the band, and it does not affect their academic status (Peebles). College athletes should also be paid because they don’t have a source of income. They spend most of their time practicing for their sport, and studying for school, so they do not have time for a job to earn money. Athletes work more than most students.
