Do college athletes deserve to be compensated for their hard work? Athletes put in a great deal of effort to win games for their college. The student-athletes have to go through drudgery everyday between workouts, practice, and class. They deserve compensation for their hard work and dedication to their school. I believe that student-athletes should get paid because they spend too much time practicing to get a job, bring in a bulk of the money the school makes, and stay in school longer if they get paid.
Student-athletes don’t have time to work a job because they have practice and school everyday. “Many of these athletes come from urban, low-class families and often leave school early because of the unimaginable pressure to be the main provider for their family at a young age.” (Lemmons) To further explain, many student-athletes who come from low-class families need the extra money to provide for themselves and their families. “Many players cite financial hardship as the reason that they declare early for the draft,” (Welch) The players that leave college for the draft would stay longer if they were paid for playing in college, if they had the money to to stay in college the coach could gird the player and develop their abilities for professional sports. “Players wouldn’t have to leave school early and would still be able to pursue an education.” (Lemmons) The extra money they would get for playing would help them finish their degrees. To further elaborate, many player need the extra money to pay for classes and books to stay in college.
