L.O: To analyze the impact of key events/people of the Civil Rights Movement. QUESTION: Why was your event/person important to the outcome of the Civil Rights Movement in America? By 1955, African Americans across the country, had begun the struggle for justice. Americans won civil rights gains in the South. Jim Crow enforced segregation between white people and black people in public places such as schools, transportation, restrooms, and restaurants. They also made it difficult for black people to vote and said that they are ‘separate but equal’. Jim Crow laws were made illegal with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and that was the outcome. So what were the reasons for this outcome to take place? Opposed to the civil rights movement and its attempt to end racial segregation and discrimination, the Ku Klux Klan grew to a membership of about 20,000 people. They fought for what they stood for but in many different ways. MLK and Malcolm X were complete opposites. In my opinion MLK was able to teach the world a lesson. He taught us that goals can be reached without violence. On the other hand, Malcolm X may have reached his goals but he created unnecessary violence along the way. Think about the constant conflict between Israel and Palestine today. Have suicide bombs, and attacks led to any resolution? No, it is just taking place repeatedly and the violence is unnecessary. The only thing that has happened is that the death toll has piled up. You may argue that even though MLK’s protests were peaceful, violence still occurred. The difference in my opinion is that the hangings and attacks that African American’s faced were out of their control. It was the decision of those that they were protesting against to violently beat them and kill
