The Article “Finding Flow” by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, expresses the choice we have in life to live or die until the end of days. He shows how we take control of our own destiny, and to not let distractions get in the way of our accomplishment. Csikszentmihalyi portrays that everyone has a different idea of accomplishment and goals, but living life to the fullest is shared by many. By saying this he means don’t waste your potential by letting side issues get in the way. In the article Csikszentmihalyi mentions a study held in a factory where most welders hated their jobs and found no passion in it.
People may conclude that we control our destiny, while other think that our success is foredestined by our natural talents. Which is more reasonable? David Epstein and Malcolm Gladwell take two different approaches on this subject. David Epstein, the author of The Sports Gene, a non-fiction article, believes that innate talent has more effect than athletic practice. On the other hand, Malcolm Gladwell, the writer of the Outliers: The Story of Success, also a non-fiction article, disagrees and concluded that practice is more important than innate talent.
Innate Talent or Time and Commitment? Some believe that we are born with the skills to become successful whereas others say that we have to train our bodies and minds to become elite. Authors, David Epstein, writer of The Sports Gene and Malcolm Gladwell, of Outliers: The Story of Success squabble between natural born talent versus continuous training. But what some journalist forget, is that not everyone is born with a gift to be prosperous in a skill. Moreover, some are able to train their mind and body into becoming well rounded in a field of choice.
I picked this speech because I can similarly be a “bonehead” Likewise, I believe I do have the same passion for hockey that Bela Fleck has for music. I can relate to the passion he has for successful completing something, giving it all you have or just down right mastering whatever the task or activity might be. As this musician hears music that inspires him his belief was that he would learn more staying up late understanding the notes, chords and his instrument himself rather than time spent with an instructor. In addition, time spent practicing whether it be alone or with someone is never time wasted.
Many people believe that fate is determined by natural ability, while others believe that one's destiny is determined by themselves. So, innate talent or preparation? Authors David Epstein and Malcolm Gladwell have opposing views on this topic. David Epstein, the author of The Sports Gene, says that natural ability is linked to success, rather than preparation and training. However, Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outliers: The Story of Success, concludes that achievement is the result of preparation and not just innate talent.
On the other hand, our harmonious passions can raise us higher, creating extraordinary success. One is failure, the other is genius. Instead of allowing ourselves to be controlled by our passions, we must take reign and control them, lest we desire to look in the mirror every morning and notice Wormwood staring back at
The United States society views above average as a gift, not a burden. Special talents should be expressed and not hidden by the government and the society of “Harrison Bergeron” sadly overlooks that in effort of making everyone
For example, “A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, worked his tail off to develop them in the skills, and uses the skills to accomplish his goal”(Brundage 37). Using unique talents can help recognize and utilize an individualist strengths and talents to create a unique path. This can happen from taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone to accomplish those goals and passions. The theme use unique talents on a unique path is recognized in the movie Rudy. Rudy used his unique talents which was he had a mindset than no other player had, he had dedication, grit, and out worked everybody.
This rupture is related to intensive practice which takes us to the fundamental idea of The Talent Code. According to Daniel Coyle, intensive and serious practice has a great influence on one’s abilities and purposes; he shows this with an example of a girl who attained a month’s value of practice in six minutes. This demonstrates that abilities and skills are created, not congenital. Moreover, the additional decisive theme Daniel Coyle tackles in “The Sweet Spot” is the significance of myelin and its
“All the hard work in the world won’t overcome a brain-based deficit” (Grandin and Panek 2). To say that copious amounts of practice alone will make a person an expert is an “injustice to the naturally gifted and a disservice to the naturally ungifted” (2). Our brains, as human beings, simply do not allow us to be an expert at something solely by practice. A person could become great at something through practice, but they must first have the genetic capacity to learn and excel at it.
Human development has interesting stages due to the changes in behaviour and growth of the body. Adolescent depression is a serious development issue which faces most households, hence requires proper attention. The occurrence of adolescent depression is most common in the modern society, though the impact of the depression has not been addressed adequately and may be significant. Many behavioural problems, for example, school dropout, drug abuse, unprotected sexual activity, suicide, self- inflicted injuries are the result of depression. Regular depression screening is important in the healthcare setting since it helps the physicians treat depression and employ recovery mechanisms for the patients.
My strengths and weaknesses will serve as my compass by pointing me in the direction that ensures that my student’s needs are met through my performance as a school
In “Strengths Finder 2.0,” Tom Rath informs us that, “You cannot be anything you want to be- but you can be a lot more of who you already are” (Rath p9). I agree with him in the fact that we must focus on our strengths rather than trying to better our weaknesses in order to become successful. So many people today put their attention towards improving their weaknesses that they are surpass by others who focus on their strengths. After learning my own personal strengths, I have a better understanding of who I am and how to focus on these both in school and in the workforce.
Schools today are overflowing with children who are struggling to read. They are falling behind due to the lack of reading and comprehension skills necessary to be successful. The Nation’s Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) annually measures the reading skills of school age children and reports the findings. The findings of this study, often called the Nation’s Report Card, shows that the United States ranks well behind other industrialized countries in the world. Based on the achievement standards set by the National Assessing Governing Board within the United States, research shows that American students are not reaching adequate levels of reading proficiency.
After knowing what my weaknesses are, I usually try to solve them and improve my skills. For example, I’m not a highly flexible and positive person, so I seek out to individuals who are flexible and positive in their lives and ask for their advice. Another strength that I have is that I usually have a positive outlook of my improvement, because I have seen examples of those who overcome their hardships and become successful in life, so I believe that if I try hard enough, I will be able to overcome my weaknesses. I’m also confident with my listening skills and my ability to focus on others and make them feel heard. I like to start on works and projects early so that if anything comes up, I will still have time to handle it.
