The author, Andrew Simmons, of “Why Teaching Poetry is So Important” is correct in saying poetry is important learn about in school. He first explains how poetry is hurt by assumptions people make based off unreliable sources like shows or movies. He talks about what people are missing out on not learning about poetry in class. Then, he discusses his positive point of view on how poetry can help a student be more open minded, and how they can become more comfortable in a classroom setting when speaking in front of their classmates. Finally, Simmons brings up how poetry can be utilized to help show grammar which is purposely excluded to create an effect in the poem. Getting started, poetry is a topic in school that is seriously hurt from characterizations including how people assume poetry is just about boring stanzas where a student will puzzled and then start laughing. It gives a student a good source of emotions when they express poetry written by original poets back in the day, which helps develop trust and empathy in a learning development. When reading poetry you also develop a more enhanced skill in speaking and listening in poetry and other texts also. Writing poetry is an excellent alternative to writing essays because of its defined rules, and its similarity with rap, which many high school students adore. According to Simmons, poetry can lead a person into many different types of writing other than poetry.
