The novella, Animal Farm was written by George Orwell in the 1940s and has proven to be a favourite throughout the last 80 years. Orwell uses an allegorical approach to tell the fascinating story of change, hope, freedom, and ultimately betrayal and corruption. When Orwell wrote this book, the world order was changing rapidly. Socialism and communism had found there way to several different countries, including Russia. Totalitarianism was rampant in Spain, Germany and Italy. Orwell’s writing was undoubtedly affected by these changes and the cruel regimes which he observed. The farm is named Manor farm, which is owned and operated by Mr. Jones. The animals that inhabit the farm have a “miserable, laborious and short” (Chapter 1, Page 3) existence. They are led by Old Major (a prizewinning boar who was idolized by the other animals). One night, Mr. Jones forgets to lock the door, and this provides Old Major with the opportunity to share his “strange dream.” At the barn meeting, Major inspires the other animals to rebel against man and depicts a life in which all animals live together with no humans to oppress or control them; all animals are equal and are known as comrades.
