As humans, we have come a long way in terms of science, once believing that bleeding was the best treatment for sickness to now having common access to any drug at a local store. Unfortunately, even as we advance in science, so do many diseases and conditions, mutating to a point where old methods of research don’t work anymore, resulting in the institution of practices such as animal experimentation. Having animal experimentation isn’t just testing new drugs or physically using animals for research; animals have also been used to create products for study, such as insulin and antibodies. However, with every method comes a cost, animal experimentation resulting in the lives of 50 to 100 million animals each year around the world, only to have results that are either profitless or faulty due to the differences between humans and other living beings. Once the best approach in terms of tackling a specific disease or condition, animal experimentation has reached its peak, giving humans less than satisfactory results and conversely taking away the time, effort, and lives put into it. Granted, animal experimentation did play an important role in the beginning of medicine. However, there is introduction of improved methods such as using synthetic livers to test the metabolic profiles of drugs (“An End to…”) that do the same job as animal research once did, but on a more accurate and less virulent scale.
