Rhetorical Analysis “Down on the factory farm” The last thing that comes to our mind when we order a piece of steak at a restaurant is how that animal we are about to eat was being treated while they were alive. According to author Peter Singer’s article "Down on the factory farm” he questions what happened to your dinner when it was still an animal? He argues about the use and abuse of animals raised for our consumption. In Singer’s article he states personal facts and convincing statistics to raise a legitimate argument.
Michael Pollan’s alternative to Factory farming has given a huge insight into a better ethics on food. In “The Animals: Practicing Complexity” Michael Pollan writes about a polyface farm and how it works. The goal of a polyface farm is to emotionally, economically, and environmentally enhance agriculture. Everything on a polyface farm has the potential to be helpful to something else on the farm. Pollan states “The chicken feed not only feeds the broilers but, transformed into chicken crap, feeds the grass that feeds the cows that, as I was about to see, feeds the pigs and the laying hens” (Pollan 345).
According to Nicholas Kristof author of “Cleaning the Henhouse” one of the main problems within industrial agriculture is that it is harmful to all human beings. The prime example that Nicholas gives is the increasing rate of salmonella outbreaks in the United States. Salmonella outbreaks are due to the improper care of hens from what they’re being fed down to the environment they’re kept in. Kristof finds it important to respond to this epidemic because it has a direct impact on human health. In addition to identifying a national problem he goes on to propose that the most effective solution would be to ban the usage of cages in chicken farming.

Back in the day, a while after World War II, industrial agriculture was applauded as a technological success that permitted an ever growing population to practically feed themselves. Now, many farmers and scientists see it as a blind alley, rather made for factory work.
Valerie Wangnet's article introduces factory farming from the viewpoint of the livestock. She first tells an awful story of dairy cows bellowing all night long because their newborn calves had been removed for slaughter. This created an issue with nearby neighbors of the farm to which police released a statement claim that the cows were not in any distress. Wangnet chastises society for valuing the lives of some animals over that of others. She continues to compare the ways in which pets are treated compared to farm animals, and then lists the many cruelties that are inflicted upon farm animals.
Scully writes: “Conservatives are supposed to revere tradition. Factory farming has no traditions, no rules, no codes of honor, no little decencies to spare for a fellow creature. The whole thing is an abandonment of rural values and a betrayal of honorable animal husbandry—to say nothing of veterinary medicine, with its sworn oath to “protect animal health” and to “relieve animal suffering.” (Scully, 161) As stated in the previous paragraph factory farming has no rules and no regulations thus giving the people in charge of these farms to have free realm over whatever they want to do. They based the treatment of animals on the ability to make a profit.

We are not alone on this Earth. We, humans, have animals by our side. We share this inhabitable planet together with animals, and they should have same right as we do on this beautiful planet. Animals are pure instinctual living creatures who never think before following their instincts. They won’t think otherwise before killing a person.

There is an important question many people today wonder; I found that there are several people who see how showing livestock affects kids in school and in life. I chose this topic because so many people think that showing livestock is just a waste of time and money, but they have no idea what it entails. Other people don’t realize that showing livestock isn’t about the money or just having a pet. I am writing this paper because everybody should know that showing isn’t about having a pet, it’s about gaining responsibilities and learning new things that can help you later in life. Showing livestock helps children go farther in life because it teaches them more responsibility, they work harder, and they never give up on their dreams.

In today’s world, there is a division among the people in the world regarding whether or not it is ethical to eat meat. After researching about eating meat and vegetarianism, I have come to the conclusion that it is indeed ethical to eat meat in today’s society. Sure, eating meat might have its drawbacks, but I have found that the benefits of eating meat far outweigh the negatives of eating it. Eating meat not only helps improve people’s health, but it also helps strengthen our economy and it has little difference in the environmental impact that involves in the farming of vegetables. Eating too much of anything usually results in a negative outcome.
There are markets available that have accessories for cows, chickens etc. Animals have a right to kind treatment and equal rights. There are other ways to give animals respect, factory farming is not the only solution to produce a large amount of meat. If people cared about animal welfare they would visit small farms and local butchers or raise meat themselves. In the olden days, people raised animals and had cheese, milk, and meat.
