In the diary entry 2 January, 1944 Anne showed a couple signs of maturing. One of the signs is when she went back and realized how bad she was talking about her mother. Another sign is when Anne admitted that she was being mean and writing horrible things down about her mother. The last thing that shows that she is maturing is when she wished she had not said these things and she thinks she is a horrible person for what she did. First, she went back and read through her diary and she realized how bad she was talking about her mother.

Over the course of the story other characters join the family into hiding such as Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, and their son Peter. During the time of hiding, Anne kept a diary to write down all her thoughts, fears, and feelings and was later known to be the most important piece of literature from the times of the Holocaust. The story takes you through their everyday lives of hiding in the annex which also includes arguing and times of happiness.
