Good health and general well being is vital to all living things. Good health ensures a comfortable, happy existence. Unfortunately, a healthy lifestyle is not always a reality for some people. Disease, infections, disorders often creep their way into and wreak havoc in living things. Human’s are no exception. One disorder in particular ruins lives, health, and everything it comes into contact with: Anorexia. Anorexia is a psychological disorder that falls within the eating disorder branch of mental illness. This devastating disorder affects people of all ages, races, genders, and walks of life. It does not discriminate. This disease is an eating disorder, which affects the way someone consumes calories. People suffering from Anorexia tend to “obsessively control and restrict their food intake.” (Source 1) This disorder is also characterized by a “distorted body image.” (Source 1) Anorexia affects the way someone thinks, distorting how one views themselves physically, like leading someone to believe they are obese/ugly/unhealthy/etc even if they are not. Physical symptoms of this disease may include, but are not limited to, “ extreme weight loss, fatigue, dizziness or fainting, low blood pressure, insomnia, dehydration, etc.”(Source 3) Emotional symptoms are a common part of this disease as well, and may include “thoughts of suicide, depressed mood, irritability, lying, fear of gaining weight, social withdrawal, etc.” (Source 3) Like I mentioned earlier, these symptoms and signs are not always easily identifiable, leading to a longer delay for proper treatment.
