Phobia What does "phobia” mean? Why do people have phobia? How people can overcome their phobias? First, what does phobia means? Phobia is an unreasonable sort of fear that can cause avoidance and panic. Phobias are a relatively common type of anxiety disorder. Second, why do we have phobia? According to Wodele and Solan” Genetic and environmental factors can cause phobias. Children who have a close relative with an anxiety disorder are at risk of developing a phobia. Distressing events, such as nearly drowning, can bring on a phobia”. Third, how we can overcome our phobias? We can explain that social phobia it is about unknown feel of fear. Social Phobia is the fear of social situations that involve interaction with other people. Social phobia is the fear and anxiety of being negatively judged by other people. There are a lot of example of social phobia, but we have some example are common: fear of public speaking, being the center of attention, and fear of social contact in general. According to Kirstin Fawcett “According to experts, social anxiety disorder is the most common anxiety disorder, as well as one of most prevalent psychiatric disorders in America”. Specific phobia often develops at a young age. A specific, or simple, phobia is the fear of a particular object or situation. According to Jessica Shelton “According to the DSM-5, prevalence rates are approximately 5% in children, 16% in 13- to 17-year-olds, and around 3%-5% in older individuals. Females are more frequently affected than males”. Example of specific phobias animal such as fear of dogs, snakes or spiders, natural environment such as fear of height, water or thunderstorms, and situational such as fear of flying or elevators. Some of the factors that lead to the development of specific phobias being attacked by an animal or experiencing panic attacks. Fears are common and expected in childhood. However, for some children and teens, their fears can become very severe over time, and even develop into a specific phobia. Specific phobias involve a marked fear or anxiety about a specific object or situation. Finally, we have agoraphobia. Leaving home can be a reason to panic for someone. Agoraphobia is a well-known type of anxiety, where you are anxious of situation from which you see no way out. With this, we mean that places, where there are many people meaning you cannot get away quickly, cause anxiety.
