• Identify three skill areas that are challenging for students with mild disabilities. Discuss two general suggestions for improving skills in these areas for infants and toddlers, preschoolers, and primary aged students.
There are certain skill areas a child with a mild disability encounter, they face many challenges. However, there are three skill areas that will be discussed. Communication, learning characteristics, and behaviors are some of the challenges students will encounter. Therefore, to improve infants and toddler’s communication skills, the teacher should interact with the child during child centered routines. Although teachers and parents should try and avoid dominating during certain interactions. Children learn from repeating the same behaviors. Another suggestion for infants and toddlers would be time delay, which will assist them with independence.
When assisting preschoolers in communication skills, a teacher or parents should try and increase spontaneous communication. Engaging in the child’s conversation and adding enthusiasm to conversation can foster communication development. A learning disability to describe students is used, called language learning. This term is only seen when a child reaches school age. Meaning a child still struggles with phonics, comprehension, and other language issues while in a general or inclusive class setting. The difference in the social setting will be the emotional aspect. Children can lack social relationships, due to their interactions among peers.
