The most influential force opposing same-sex marriage is the religious community. The religious church’s has no involvement in marriage “legally”. The church may only play a role in the marital ceremony and its only purpose is to give its blessing. “The state, not the church, defines the nature of legal marriage.” (Sullivan, 1997, p.68) Many people may shun and look down upon gay marriage because they may believe it unjust and morally incorrect; however, that shouldn’t give officials the ability to strip people of their rights based off of preference. You are denied marriage and all of its benefits. You are denied your happiness and are constantly looked down upon. According to ProCon.org, in 1973 Maryland had become the first state to pass a law banning homosexual. They then validated that only union between men and women are just and recognized by law. I believe this law was unjust; so did Nathan Goetting. In his 2013 scholarly article he states “change is sure to occur, probably sooner rather than later.”(Goetting 137)

Homosexual relationships have been known to date back to historical times. There will always be a debate over whether same-sex marriage is right and if it should completely legalized in the United States. Banning and not allowing homosexuals to marry is discrimination. Same-sex partners are denied benefits and rights that heterosexual couples have. Same-sex union should be legalized and recognized everywhere so that homosexual couples are able to claim the same rights as heterosexual couples have, such as, the right to make marital decisions regarding their partner’s health and allowing them to have the ability to adopt one another’s children if any accidents or situations may prevail. By legalizing homosexual unions, equality for all people in a relationship will finally come
