In this paper, I will show a specific example to illustrate my position for limited animal rights with the argument: to what extent animal experiment for beauty industry should be permissible? Animal right is the idea in which all non-human animals are entitled to the possession of their own lives and have equal consideration as human beings. On the other hand, animal experimentation is the use of non-human animals in experiments that seek to control the variables that affect the behavior or biological study under control. For decades, scientists have tried to understand the effects of the chemical exposure by experimenting on animals. The methods and the procedures are extremely cruel. Millions of animals are intentionally poisoned to death or suffer from chemical assaults to their skin, eyes, and internal organs. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), a premier philosopher in the Western tradition, holds that “We preserve our moral and inherent dignity by treating animals kindly because in so doing we take our humanity as an end-in-itself since animals are like us.” It would be like treating our own humanity as a mere means if we were to be arbitrary as a mere means if we were to be arbitrary cruel to animals like us. Animals do not find themselves obligated by the moral law nor by humans because according to Kant, animals do not have recognition of moral law. Humans use animals as they please because mere animals do not have any human quality and moral law. However, this difference between humans and animals have led to abuse of animals thus, we as humans lose our moral dignity. If humans lose their moral dignity, that is the most fundamental philosophical attribute that makes us humans, we are no better than animals that do not have ends-in-themselves. Our duties to animals are indirect duties to other human beings, and being kind to animals helps develop a good character in us.
