Argument For Gun Control

The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution grants its’ citizens the right to keep and bear arms. Though the Second Amendment addresses the legality of owning a firearm, the morality of owning a gun is left as an unanswered question. Since the right to bear arms is not a fundamental right and guns cause harm to innocent people, it is my position that the government should endorse stricter gun control measures, particularly automatic and semiautomatic weapons. In this paper I will argue my position of abolition by examining both premises in depth, discussing the role and duty of the government, and addressing an objection to my position. Civilians with access to automatic and semiautomatic guns never use them with good intentions. Guns as such are usually used to commit mass murders such as Sandy Hook, Colorado movie theater, and the Charleston church shooting. The victims of these horrid crimes were innocent people who were just trying to live a good life by attending school, getting out to see a movie, and worshipping their God. Three important values of the government are safety and security, civil liberties and human rights, and open accountability and visibility (Dershowitz 622). The safety and security of the citizens the government governs must be a concern for the government. Allowing civilians to own certain classes of guns, in particular guns used in combat such as AK-47’s or M16 rifles, is a blatant disregard for the safety of citizens. It is one thing to have a gun in the name of self-defense; however, there is no justifiable scenario that would make it acceptable for a private citizen to own warfare weapons whose sole purpose is to cause mass casualties. Subsequently, another important value of the government is civil liberties and human rights. All humans have the right to life. This right is in jeopardy of being infringed upon by allowing semiautomatic weapons in the commonplace of citizens. As previously mentioned, combat guns that are introduced to commonplace of citizens only end in fatalities. The final important value of government, as argued by Dershowitz, is open accountability and visibility. The government must be held accountable for the death of innocent people. Not only that, but the government can be held to the visibility standard in regards to abolishing certain classes of guns by visibly trying to better the lives of the Americans citizens by ridding the streets of certain
