Imagine leaving high school with $29,400 in debt. $29,400 for 4 years and a diploma. Is that fair? Well, sadly this will be a reality if you’re a college student. The average debt for a college student is $29,400. Could you imagine starting a life with that large amount of debt on your shoulders? This should be a feeling that no one knows, however, it has become far too familiar for many Americans. I support free higher education because, Americans who made it to a public college should not be buried in debt, The United States of America is the richest country in the world and should provide free higher education like many other developed countries, and lastly, the high cost of free higher education holds back the citizens academic potential. The United States is supposed to be the “greatest” country in the world. However, how come other developed countries provide free higher education to the citizens and the United States does not? Brazil, Germany, Finland, France, Norway, Slovenia, and Sweden have successfully provided free higher education to their young citizens (It’s Time to Make College Tuition and Debt Free). Why can’t the United States do the same? The United States could easily make budget cuts in order to guarantee this right. For example, The United States spent around 718 billion dollars on the military in 2011 alone. If free higher education for all American citizens cost 70 billion dollars a year, that would provide roughly 10 years of free higher education. We spend more money on military than the next 20 countries combined. Yet we can’t provide for the citizens of the United States? Is war more important the financial stability of the citizens? The average cost of a public university is 20,000 dollars a year and most students go for 4 years. The average student leaves college with 28,000 in debt (Make College Free For All).
