No to Free Colleges
In the economy today, to get a sufficient paying job to support a family and him or herself after high school means college. With college there comes some pretty high prices like paying for tuition, housing, and other needs that cause a hole in college students’ wallets. President Obama has recently introduced the America’s College Promise, which entitles students with a 2.5 GPA to go to a community college for free for two years. Now the concept is wonderful to think of not paying for tuition, but in reality it’s not feasible for America. Students would miss out on the financial responsibilities for higher education, the student population would skyrocket, and it could hurt four year colleges.

While some think to help close this gap, is to have a fair chance of everyone going to college, it will not. It is a grand plan, however what resources would America take away from something else to help supply the two years tuition free for over 10,000 people? In should colleges be free, Andrew P. Kelly emphasizes, “Solving the college cost crisis will require fundamental changes in cost structures, not just tuition prices. To get there, leaders need to foster competition across all types of providers, not create a public monopoly.” Taking money from another section of the economy can limit that sections ability for it to do the tasks it needs too. For instance, if Americans got taxed to help support the colleges that would cause an economical hole, and they would not be able to use their money in more beneficial places to circulate the currency.
