Artificial dyes are found in a majority of processed foods in America. Most synthetic dyes are made of, or are based off of petroleum, a crude oil. Since these dyes are mainly petroleum based they have serious health risks on people, especially those diagnosed with ADHD, (Attention deficit/hyperactive disorder.) Because of these potential dangers, laws dating back to the 19th century have been passed, banning the addition of dyes and other harmful substances to foods. Through the years there have been many debates, laws and protests against food dyes and their effects on humans and animals. Cochineal dyes are made of crushed cochineal beetles, although this is considered to be a natural dye it can still cause life threatening allergic reactions. Crushed cochineal beetles release a deep crimson liquid when crushed, which is what cochineal dyes is made of. Although most people have no problem digesting cochineal dye, some people are extremely allergic to it. The dye can cause extreme allergic reactions that can send the victim into anaphylactic shock and cause breathing to be incredibly difficult. Although there are some reasonable arguments for using artificial dyes over natural ones, the reasons for not using synthetic dyes are much more prominent. Artificial dyes actually last much longer than natural dyes, greatly increasing processed foods shelf life. The wider range of colors of artificial dyes and the lower price over natural dyes have led to more producers using synthetic dyes over natural ones.
