Babies having babies. This is what some Americans call teen pregnancy. Teen pregnancy is defined as a 13 through 19-year old teen becoming pregnant (Kirby 144). “In our sex-saturated culture, many unmarried people, especially teenagers, feel pressured to be sexually active. The temptations now may be greater than ever because people are delaying marriage until their late '20s or '30s (What Does the Bible Say About Premarital Sex).” Teen pregnancy is a very controversial topic because there are advantages and disadvantages of having a baby as a teen. Teen pregnancy should be prevented to lower the statistics of teen birth rates in the United States. Teen pregnancy became a big issue in the 1950's. For example, in 1 Corinthians it says, “Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body (Holy Bible: New Living Translation, 1 Corinthians 6:18-20).” Today many teen pregnancies are either by accident or not consensual. There are nearly 400 teens in America that are being raped by men who are six, or more, years older than their female consort ("Politics and Teen Pregnancy"). This does not mean that these women should abort their babies. The Bible specifically says, “If anyone takes a human life, that person's life will also be taken by human hands. Other commonly used methods are condoms and oral contraceptives. For women, hormonal birth control works in three different ways to prevent getting pregnant. It prevents ovulation, thickens cervical mucus (making it more difficult for the sperm to travel), and makes implantation of the fertilized egg difficult by thinning the uterine lining. The most common type of hormonal birth control is the pill. However, there are six other kinds: shots/injections, patches, “morning after” pills, rings, implants, and non-hormonal copper IUD (“Teen Pregnancy Issues and Challenges”). The use of condoms has increased since the 1980s because of the HIV epidemic (Kirby 147). “Although condoms are the most commonly used method of contraception at first sex, the use of condoms declines with age and sexual experience. Furthermore, the longer a sexual relationship between two people lasts, the less likely they are to use condoms (Kirby 147).” Other methods that are good, but have lower effectiveness rates include the following: NFP/fertility awareness, male and female condoms, cervical cap and diaphragm, withdrawal/”pull-out method,” and spermicide (“Teen Pregnancy Issues and Challenges”). A recent study said the way to prevent teen
