It was the summer of 2011 when everything changed. At that moment I didn't know she would never be the same. I didn't lose her physically , I lost her mentually and that pain hurts just as much. The doctors diagnosed her with schizophrenia. They also said that my identical twin would never be who I remembered her to be. I believed the doctors until I stumbled across a article on genome editing. If you did not know Genome editing is a type of genetic engineering in which DNA is altered in the genome of an organism using engineered nucleases. It has already saved a girl dying from leukaemia. They used a genome editing tool called TALEN to help treat Layla's untreatable cancer. CRISPR-Cas9, Zinc fingers, and TALEN are the three genome editing …show more content…
They are right if it fails in the wrong hands it could be the end of the human race. There should be lots of regulations so that will never happen. I understand there concerns but who wouldn't want a posibility to cure diseases and revolutinize the treatment of others. My sisters illneses has affected her and the people around her. She has gone in and out of hospitals since she first got diagnosed. It has been years and the doctors still can't find a solution. As I see it genome editing would the best solution to her schizophrenia . It could help the millions of people who suffer diseases and mental illneses every year. Many scientist are already looking for ways to cure diseases and mental illnesses. Scientist Feng Zhang goal is to treat diseases of the mind. Zhang said" llnesses take away the ability to make meaning connections, to think clearly a very essential part of being human" . Qiurong Ding, professor in Shanghai, China, uses CRISPR to study new ways of curing life-threatening illnesses. In college I would like to bring awarness to genome editing by hosting educational events. This would educate people on the potential of genome editing
