Infertility is an issue that many families face, but it is an issue that can be overcome with the many options available today. The most basic treatment for infertility if lifestyle modifications which mainly require individual motivation to make these changes and is an effective option that is inexpensive. Surgery and medications used to treat infertility come with a higher risk than changing lifestyle behaviors but are especially effective in couples who want multiple children. The more complicated alternatives for infertility include intrauterine insemination, in vitro fertilization, posthumous assisted reproduction, surrogacy, and adoption. Infertility is defined as “the inability of a couple to get pregnant or the inability of a woman to carry a pregnancy to term.” (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2017, para. 1). Infertility is measured by the amount of time a couple spends having unprotected sex without being able to conceive. After participating in unprotected sex for one year and not conceiving, a couple is considered infertile. However, for couples who are over age 35, they are considered infertile after 6 months of trying to conceive (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2017). For some people this word can mean the end, but it does not have to be. In this paper I will talk about the variety of alternatives and treatment options available to couples who are infertile. Women who have a body mass index of 27 or higher are encouraged to lose weight in order to increase their chance of conception. This lifestyle modification is especially beneficial for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome. Losing weight should be the first step in combating infertility because it is less expensive than other alternatives and also improves other aspects of life beyond infertility (Kuohung & Hornstein, 2018). Women who have a body mass index of less than 17 often have a difficult time conceiving due to a low secretion rate of the gonadotropin hormone which helps facilitate pregnancy. Therefore, women that fall into this category are advised to gain weight and exercise less. This is also a more effective alternative to infertility treatments and leads to a healthier life overall.
