Photography and truth can be very complex things within themselves but you bring them together it creates a mass of possibilities. In certain cases photography is meant to tell us the truth, but how do we know the truth is true? What makes us believe what we see is true? “As a photographer, you have the liberty to innovate, create and portray anything in any imaginable way, whatever you have envisioned, like an artist or write. As a photojournalist, you have to tell only the truth.” (Quora.com) Although I don’t find myself agreeing with how this is worded, I agree that as photographers we can portray things how we want them to be see but as photojournalists they need the truth to be told to go along with a story. Whereas when photographers make work, we usually want to make work that has to visually be read and interpreted. A lot of times an image is more impactful than words. A lot can change in the blink of an eye and I think that is what makes the truth hard to decipher. Place is a huge part of this, places are constantly changing and is it is then “the artists responsibility to render a place according to the wishes of those who live there? Is that the ultimate goal of art? To please, placate, to make us feel good?” No that is not what good art should do. An artist has to take care of what is considered to be his or her own responsibility, and if that offends than so be it. Photography finds itself in a difficult situation in the form of a discussion on the truth. “A painter is unlikely to ever encounter any of the various arguments with which photography is often treated. A painting obviously is an artifact in that way that photography is not. You can take a photograph in such a way that even though it is a complete artifact, as all photographs are, it will look like an objective depiction of whatever was in front of the camera’s lens.” People often find this hard to understand.
