Why recess
Time for recess, these 3 words have been said in schools for as long as we can remember and is most often the most favorite time of the day for children. However, there is a debate on if recess really helps children’s social competence and academic performance or is it a waste of time. Some people think that recess is just a chance for children to get bullied, but looking at the scientific research, recess has many benefits, that we can’t take away from children. The first biggest arguments against children having recess in schools is, it being a waste of time. Many people think that recess time could be used for more instructional teaching time instead of playing on a playground with piers. The Atlanta Public school superintendent, Benjamin Canada argued that he took away recess and replaced it with physical education and that there school system achievement scores had went up. Yes, bullying is a very big problem in schools, but in the reading the author had a good point. The author states “It is true that kids get bullied on the playgrounds, but they get bullied in the cafeterias, too and in the hallways, in bathrooms, in locker rooms, just about anywhere with little to no adult supervision.” (Pellegrini, 2008) So what does that tell you, if we take away recess bulling will stop, probably not, it can happen anywhere at any time. This tells us the importance of adult supervision is in all areas of the school.
