For many years the debate on Undocumented Immigrants has been a controversial issue in the U.S. Americans have expressed different views on the matter, but still it always comes down to these two questions; should they be granted U.S. citizenship or sent back to their home countries? What many fail to question is the reason why these immigrants leave the countries they were born in, to come here in the first place. The intention of the undocumented is not to come to America and cause trouble. Many of these people have come here in desperation, afraid for their lives, and coming here illegally was their only option of survival. Genocides, harsh wars, and extreme poverty has left many immigrants helpless, and so they come here. Another assumed accusation about undocumented immigrant is that they have came here by sneaking into the country, but this is also not true. In fact, most undocumented immigrants came to the U.S. with temporary visa’s that have now expired. U.S. immigration laws make it very difficult for immigrants to be granted citizenship, even if they did not come here illegally. People also assume that undocumented immigrants do not pay taxes. This is the most inaccurate assumption of all yet I don’t understand why because it is so easy for people to just do their research and get the truth. Immigrants collectively pay between $90 and $140 billion each year in taxes, and a recent study found that undocumented immigrants alone paid more than $11.8 billion in taxes in 2012. Everyone pays sales taxes on goods they purchase and property taxes on the homes they buy or rent, and more than half of all undocumented immigrant households file income tax returns using Individual Tax Identification Numbers
