Genetic testing should not be openly provided to everyone unless necessary. There are multiple reasons as to why this is true, such as costs, emotional impact, and the test results don’t always come out to be true. The biggest reason, however, out of these different ones, is the cost. The cost of genetic testing overpowers the other reasons due to the amount of money that is needed in order to pursue these tests. Even though cost is virtually the significant factor, all of the others are still highly important. To start off, the cost of genetic testing alone costs a lot, let alone the cost of genetic counseling added to that. The cost of genetic testing depends on what type of test you get done, but the cost can range from $200 to even $10,000 and more. On average, genetic testing can cost $3376.02 (citation). This cost is already a lot and for those who test positive of having genetic disorders or possibly having genetic disorders will need genetic counseling to help them conquer the emotional impact resulting from the fear or distress of having a genetic disorder in play. There is always a small chance that something may go wrong and the results received will be wrong. This won’t always be the case, but even if the tests are accurate and true, the percentage outcome can be the opposite. For example, the percentage may be an 80% chance for a genetic disorder, however, the 20% of it can still be a possibility meaning you won’t end up with that genetic disorder, which ends up having the stress from the genetic test results be all for nothing, when there was no worry needed in the first place.
