There are over 6,000 genetic diseases that we know about in the world. Without someone to help the unfortunate few through their emotional, physical, and psychological pain, many would have an even harder time managing. Luckily for them, there are people known as genetic counselors. Genetic counselors are doctors and therapists that help patients with the genetic disorder as well as their families through their hardships. However, in our modern age, a patient can get the results by mail circumventing the need for genetic counselors. This should not happen. We need genetic counselors to explain the complexities of genetic diseases and to guide patients in their response to their genetic issues. A genetic counselor can be found in all walks of the medical life. From government, industry, and research, to working in clinics to clinical labs that provide genetic testing, and with every advancement in medicine their field expands to new heights. Some people can have it severely from their birth, in others it may not be as sever and wait to show up till their teens or young adults. Cystic Fibrosis is a fatal genetic disease that effects the gene that makes a protein which controls the movement of salt and water in and out of your body's cells (https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health-topics/cystic-fibrosis). That can cause mucus to build up and clog a few of the organs in the body. When the mucus gets stuck in the lungs it can make breathing very difficult. The mucus can also make it easy for "bacteria to get stuck in the airways" (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/cystic-fibrosis/symptoms-causes/syc-20353700) . It has also been known to get stuck in the digestive tract and pancreas. The mucus halts the enzymes in the stomach from getting into the intestines and in turn prohibits the body from digesting
