Arguments Against Affirmative Action

It is time for the United States of America to redefine success. “97 percent of all corporate leaders are white men” (Blasi). That percentage that needs to change. The US needs more women and people of other races. With just white men as the leaders in our country, there is no other viewpoint to go by when making decisions that could change the nation. Affirmative action helps make that percentage change. Affirmative action is a policy that states that when college admissions are deciding who is accepted to college, they can use race as a large factor in the decision. This policy is an appropriate tool for college admissions because it gives everyone equal opportunities, it helps defeat racism, and it creates diversity on college campuses. “By integrating “preferred positions in society,” affirmative action policies undermine racist intuitions entrenched in the American Psyche---intuitions that stop people from acknowledging the full humanity of black people, in particular” (Wicks-Lim). Affirmative action principles weaken stereotypes that people have about black people. By having more colored and more Hispanic students in college, it will create more diversity and people will be more accepting of them. “Affirmative action is an important anti-racism tool, not a program to reduce inequality per se” (Wicks-Lim). Affirmative action doesn’t take away equality, and it doesn't cause racism. Affirmative action makes more college students aware and accepting of other ethnicities. Now some argue that affirmative action promotes discrimination. While this may be true in some cases, most research states that affirmative action decreases racism and discrimination by having multiple ethnic groups at colleges.
