While comparing the role of a manager and leader, it can be very easy to intertwine the two. There are many similarities and differences between a leader and a manager, though some may argue that they are very much the same. Some similarities between the two are that others admire them and envision themselves working in that role, they hold themselves to higher level of values that others want to embrace, and they both work to obtain mutual goals among their unit. “Both leaders and managers envision the future and lead the way towards a productive and efficient unit with satisfied personnel. So much so that I can’t wait to be in my career to show some of the same leadership qualities as them. Many have led by example and that has been a great opportunity for me to be a part of. Many team members have come to them for advice even though they hold the same degree and licensing yet, they value the leader’s opinion and take into consideration how they should carry out the task based on the leader’s advice. One of the most wonderful things I have encountered is sometimes two nurses will just be talking about their assignments for the day and you will see various other nurses say, “I am here for you if you need any help with a procedure, consent, other patients” even though they have busy days too. The willingness to assist others was amazing. There have been shifts where there is a problem with a patient or their family and the charge nurse has stepped in to guide the RN and give advice or assisted on things they aren’t so confident with. They are valuable assets on the unit because they help with problem solving and delivery a standard continuity of care for the entire team. I believe with a leader the qualities they possess just come naturally to them while as a manager you are placed into that role and your expectations are taught to you based on the structure of the organization you work for. Both roles are necessary to form a solid team and a functional nursing
