Leadership Journal: Authority My second leadership journal is focused on the topic of authority. This journal also allows me to reflect on my learning from both the academic and practicum experience with the nurse leader I follow in weeks three and four. Other things that will be integrated are how I influence others, serve, and provide opportunities to help others be successful. I think as a charge nurse, I have practiced both formal and informal authority. As a charge nurse, I am responsible to assign the staff to patient assignment, rooms the incoming patient will go, and lead my team in anyway I could. On the other hand, I can also influence my team’s decision once they come to me and ask for advice. I truly believe in the saying, respect is earned and not given. I remember when I was assigned as the relief charge nurse at the beginning, I had a hard time confronting or asking my team to do something for me. I think because I was young and new they don’t think I am capable of making decisions. I had to prove them and work hard that what I do is right from my decision and practice. Leaders lead from their values and belief (Russell, 2001). As servant leaders, we should leads based from our true values and beliefs, which is to inspire and make others happy. Few of the people I have served are my sister, and my co-workers. My sister was lost and undecided on what she wants to pursue with her life. I use the power of faith by making her closer to God to see the right path; guiding her in her decision; and setting as a good example to help her realize that it is okay to get lost sometimes. Being able to selflessly help her and seeing her where is now is very rewarding. On the other hand, my co-workers during the hurricane is the other people I had an opportunity to serve. I was able to cook for them in midst of the hurricane and bring food for them knowing that they are stuck in our facility. Simple things like this help them feel better, boost their spirit, and allow them to feel how important they are to me without expecting anything in
