This photograph of Elizabeth Eckford illustrates the racism and segregation that was accepted during this time period. The image was taken September 4, 1957, and has since turned into a historically educational piece about the civil rights movement in the United States. In an attempt to gradually integrate Little Rock High, nine black volunteer students were selected to attend the high school, giving the name ‘Little Rock 9’. On September 3, 1957 the nine students arrived at the High School, but were denied access by the Arkansas National Guard. Little Rock Central High School located in Little Rock, Arkansas is the home of the iconic Little Rock 9 Screaming Image, Associated Press Photographer. At first glance, you’ll notice the focal point- Elizabeth Eckford, with sunglasses over her eyes. In one hand, she holds a notebook close to her chest, while the other arm is down at her side. Her eyebrows are furrowed plaintively, and her mouth is closed and inexpressive. While her figure is blurry, she is upfront and closest to the camera making her a pronounced individual in this photograph. A crowd can be seen behind, seemingly following her. There are five women, only four visible, directly behind her. Two of which carry what seems to be school supplies, including notebooks, a lunchbox, and textbooks.
