Teaching students with exceptional abilities can be both challenging and rewarding at the same time. Students are all different and have different ways of learning, therefore, being creative in the classroom is essential. Students learn best when they are engaged. In this day and age, technology plays a huge role in engaging students and aiding them in being successful students and preparing them for the future. Many schools are embracing the use of tablets in the classroom, especially special education teachers (Education, 2012). There are many applications for tablets that can assist students whom have Autism, deficits with Motor Skills and students with Speech difficulties. Nook offers an application called Mission Rescue Kloog, which is a social skills application. This application is for users ranging from early learners to teenagers. Students learn social skills in engaging ways in which they can earn incentives at the end of each lesson. The incentives can range from earning coins to earning points or moving up a level in the lesson (Shine Centre for Autism, 2015). There are 17 individual lessons and a section that allows the student to reflect on what they have learned at the end of each lesson.
Talk Tablet is another application for students on the Autism Spectrum and for individuals suffering from stroke, Down Syndrome, traumatic brain injuries and other disabilities that impair speech and communication (Gus Communication Devices Inc, 2017). This communication tool allows users to create their own vocabulary or use the vocabulary library embedded within the program. It allows the students to respond individually or as a team. The teacher creates the game by assigning questions and giving the students multiple choice answers to choose from. To make it visually stimulating and engaging for the students, teachers can add videos, images and charts and diagrams as the background of a question. Questions are displayed on the main screen in the classroom and students answer on their own devices. Each time the students answer a given question, points are assigned for answering correctly and for answering in a timely manner. The students are fully engaged when we play Kahoot and they collaborate with other students to come up with answers. It is great for visual, tactile and audio learners
