Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a disorder of social interaction and developmental which can be seen nationwide. Throughout the years, autism has become more prevalent in society. Upon further research, all experts agree the symptoms of ASD differ from patient to patient, and there is no known cure, although there has been continuing research to discover one. The majority of people who do not understand autism have been misled with common misconceptions. People may have different views regarding autism and its effects, but there are treatment options to help the people who are affected as well as pieces of legislation protecting those with this disorder. Many types of treatment are available. Dr. Suzanne Arroyo, Licensed Clinical Psychologist PhD, stated in an email interview, “Parents of patients need to investigate treatment programs, but focus on making sure the treatment is considered evidence based, this means there has been significant research done to demonstrate success.” Many parents want best for their children and will do anything in their power to make the child’s, and their own, life easier. Because of this, parents are willing to test new therapies that have not been tested and proven. Dr. Arroyo suggest taking the time to look through options available and picking one that will best benefit the child. A main therapy found in numerous articles, including the email interview with Dr. Arroyo, is Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA). ABA is used to teach communication, play, social, academic, self-care, work and community living skills, and to reduce problem behaviors in learners with autism (“Treatments & Therapies”). Other therapies are based on ABA, but may focus more specifically on certain areas.
