• In the beginning of this article, it outlines a scenario about a student who attends Physical Education class during school time. and who has Autism. During the Physical Education sessions, he tends to lash (yell) out for no specific reason. Throughout the article, it discusses the Special Eeducation process, IEP goals necessary, continuum placement options, and the National Standards. Menear & Smith discuss different tips and strategies for teachers to use for students with Autism. It is important for students to have Physical Education throughout parts of the day because it focuses their needs and goals. Making sure their routines and work is structured because they tend to work best during those circumstances. One teaching tip mentioned for Physical Education is to “make sure to be consistent with methods used in the classroom for behavior management and communication” (pg. 35). Incorporating drawing or visuals around the room shows students the picture schedule or routines they will follow.

Students with autism need repetition to follow the sequence and schedule in the classroom. During my Special Education experience, I was working with a student who has Autism and we used same activities to show the student that each day the student will be doing the same thing but focusing on a different skill.
