There are about “703,800 people currently working as Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics in the United States” (“How Many People Are Currently Employed as Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics in the United States?”). There are “283,315 mechanic businesses in the United States alone” (“Industry Market Research, Reports, and Statistics”). Future mechanics would want to know information about: what being a mechanic or automotive service technician entails, whether it be the definition of the occupation, amount of education required, personal qualifications required, earnings, working conditions and hours, location of employment, work networking, advancement outlook, employee satisfaction, advantages and disadvantages of this type …show more content…

Automotive technicians troubleshoot vehicle systems, test components on vehicles to make sure they work properly and efficiently and examine all “critical and necessary parts''(Stoltz), and their performances. They also “perform basic care and maintenance”(Stoltz) on all types of vehicles, including “oil changes, tire rotations, and repairs on worn or broken parts” (“Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics: Occupational Outlook Handbook”). “A mechanic doesn’t really need any experience to start out, they just have to be mechanically inclined, but the more education you get the easier it is to get a placement at a shop”(“Graves”). There are always opportunities to be a ‘grunt’ -someone who does the dirty, less important jobs that no one wants to do in shops. “Automotive technicians can also advance to better roles of a service manager or an automotive instructor, which can help them earn higher salaries. Some technicians also choose to start their own business after completing their training.”(Byrne). There are a number of certifications mechanics can apply for and get to increase their pay and their overall outlook.
