The Aztec Empire is one of the most memorable and recognizable. It started in the early 13th century and ended around 1521. When asked what is known about the Aztecs, people would most likely mention their human sacrifices. However, there was so much more to them than that. Other aspects of their Empire were their geography, farming techniques, and yes, of course, their religion/rituals. Most importantly, the Aztecs should be remembered though, by their complex and interesting culture. One aspect of their culture that was important to the Aztecs was their immense amount of land and their farming techniques. Their culture had many components and could be described as very intense, interesting, and overall very complex. Women and children were cared about and seen as very important in the Aztec culture. There was even a procedure and ritual for going to visit newborns and their mothers (Doc Q). The children were raised in a certain way and their parents played a big part in their lives even throughout adulthood (Doc O). The Aztec culture also had a very distinct way of counting periods of time. They had two parts to their “calendars” the 260-day cycle and the 365-day cycle and every 52 years they would align. The time between these 52-year intervals was celebrated since one 52 year period was considered a century (Doc B). Tying back to my previous statement about the Aztec religion, the gods also played a big role in their culture. This is shown many times including the naming of Tenochtitlan. “According to the revelation of our god when he appeared to me this night … There our name with be praised and our Aztec nation made great… Our god orders us to call this place Tenochtitlan” (Doc D). The Aztecs are mostly remembered for this part of their culture but as mentioned there were so many other interesting factors to them to create their composite culture. The Aztecs struggled quite a bit as an empire (Doc P), but still, they were able to thrive and be successful for many, many
