Banning Books In Public Schools

Books have always been an important part in history. They are in our everyday lives to teach or to entertain. Although, books may seem like a good thing, some people oppose them, In fact, books have offended people to the point where books are banned in certain schools. I believe books should not be banned because they teach a lesson and are important.

To start with, public schools are proposing a ban on books, more specifically, To Kill a Mockingbird, because of the use of racist language such as the word n****r. I disagree to this because To Kill a Mockingbird uses racist language for a reason. It is not intentionally calling the reader a n****r but to emphasize the use of racism in the early 30’s. The article, “The ironic, enduring legacy of banning ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ for racist language” states that the book was not only banned for the use of racist language but because of the plot centering on rape. The article states “It was not images of race, but of sex, that caused the first big uproar. I believe books should have a maturity level similar to that of movies, video-games, etc. Like movies, some books use curse words. A child should not be reading books that contain these type of words. A caption or sticker should be on the cover to show that is not recommended for a certain age. You wouldn’t want your child to pick up a book with the usage of curse words and could potentially influence them to use those words around others. Certain books should also be banned if they are promoting harm or intentionally offending the reader. It depends on context, and an example of this is To Kill a Mocking Bird, where the author uses racism as more of an example than to intentionally offend the
