This is important because it gives the same descriptions to Doodle and the scarlet ibis. At the beginning of the short story is explains that Doodle will never be able to walk, run, or even move.

As I read the syllabus these quotes really struck me. While reading Audre Lorde’s quote the first thought that came to mind was that my wellbeing is dependent on the wellbeing of those around me. What happens to you affects me and what happens to me affects you, whether we are aware of it happening or not. As women we feel deeply and we are all part of a bigger plan to give life to mankind; therefore it is reasonable to assume that we are all interlocked with each other.

The Tempest, a play written by William Shakespeare, disapproves of colonization by showing resistance, opposition, and hatred towards those who trusted they had power and control over those who were considered to be inferior. Caliban resists the overwhelming and evil power of those similar to Prospero’s (and Prospero himself). He challenges Prospero’s control and disrespects him as an overall person. Caliban struggles to accept the fact that Prospero, along with people close to him, have made him a prisoner in his own home. Justifiably, he curses and torments Prospero every chance he gets.
I chose this quote because it sums Iris Murdoch into one little sentence. I used this quote mainly because it is how amazing one sentence can say so much but also say so little about a person. This would be a great sentence for any normal writer, bur Murdoch’s life was so eventful that it could never be simply summed up in a sorry sentence like that. When I read this line from Iris Murdoch’s literary work the first thing I thought was, wow this sounds like another author I previously read and did a Quote and Commentary. I cannot put a finger on this other writers name, I can recall that he talked about religion like it was just a master idea to control people.
Ursula Le Guin defines Omelas as a utopia where the citizens’ lives are never wretched. Le Guin captures her readers’ attention by describing the city’s beauty with the colorful scenery, events featuring games and horse riding, and the everlasting happiness. She does a great job of leading her readers into thinking this could be the perfect society, but leaves us with the question of satisfaction. According to Le Guin, “happiness is based on a just discrimination of what is necessary, what is neither necessary nor destructive, and what is destructive” (p. 2). This quote means that there must be a balance for the society to succeed.
