Tom Johnson fosters positive relationships with students, staff and parents within our community. He is truly interested in the staff and students’ journey toward success. He spends countless hours mentoring teachers and developing strategies to increase student achievement. One such instance, is that Mr. Johnson, in his understanding of the changing dynamics of education, helped the transition of Shallowater High School to a TEA recognized STEM Academy in 2013. He collaborated with teachers from all disciplines to make this transition and incorporate project-based learning in all classes.
I am Carla White and I am a teacher and a department chair in an online school for middle school and high school students. Unlike in a post-secondary online schools, this is more appropriate to younger group of students where they access their classes online using a platform called Edmentum. It is an online learning management system where they work at their own pace and finish classes online. It has interactive textbooks, assessment and classroom activities. I am the Science Teacher of all Science classes where I provide support such as tutorials via chat, phone or in person, provide feedback and score writing assignments and perform onsite labs for High School Biology and Chemistry class.
Hopefully, the skills, discipline and encouragement that they have attained in their journey in my class go beyond the classroom and are used to improve their lives and also the lives of others around them. Students often see the teacher as a role model from whom they seek advice on topics ranging from fundamental concepts to future career development. Through nine years of teaching experience, I have helped many students to gain leadership skills and self-confidence in order to develop their careers. Chemistry plays a major role in the liberal arts college for both science and non-science majors. I always believe I have done my best commitment to initiate and develop tomorrow’s scientific leaders in the field of education, research, medicine and industry.
Though I have had many achievements and disappointments, one thing that I have always been proud of is my ardor for everything that I do. The Governor’s School for Science and Math offers a rigorous path to pursue, but it is the one that I have dedicated myself to for many years. GSSM opens up a myriad of new doors for me; it will provide me with opportunities some people would never even dream of. My lively personality will fit in perfectly with GSSM’s positive environment and, in spite of the necessary sacrifices, the reward far outweighs the cost. My dynamic personality will contribute to the society of The Governor’s School in various ways.
Candidate Personal Statement: Why do you want to be a part of student government? I want to be a part of student government because I want to further serve my community within Flushing High School as well as support people I hold dear within the school. If I were elected to student government, I would want to unite the community as well as succeed in performing my leadership duties within the student community. I believe my previous experience in Bring Change to Mind (BC2M), Peer Group Connections (PGC), as well as my Sisters Keeper (MSK), has properly prepared me for this position as they have helped me build leadership skills such as the public speaking and a keen sense of corporation in group settings. These three services have prioritized giving back to the community and further supporting Flushing High School.
I'd love to be apart of the staff team because I love the community's players. I'd like to learn about the players and the team more. I have a ton of experience with being staff, as I've owned and moderated several servers. I'm on Universe (Factions) daily. I'm on for hours a day.

I plan to go into the field of Education when I begin attending North Greenville University. I am pursuing this field because I have always felt a strong passion to assist in developing young children into successful adults. I feel that teachers are a type of superheroes that help children grow and set the foundation for prosperous lives. In elementary school, children learn how to read, write, and facts about science and history. Teaching children about the importance of conserving the environment is very crucial for the future of the earth.
I would like to be a part of the President’s “Educate to Innovate” national campaign to motivate and inspire students to excel in STEM. President Obama said. “Passionate educators with issue expertise can make all the difference, enabling hands-on learning that truly engages students—including girls and underrepresented minorities—and preparing them to tackle the grand challenges of the 21st century such as increasing energy independence, improving people’s health, protecting the environment, and strengthening national security.” I am certainly a passionate educator with issue expertise with a goal of preparing our youth with the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in this competitive global economy. This includes the ability to think critically, solve complex problems, and drive advancements in science and technology.
Three very important components of my educator’s DNA are love for what I do and those I serve, a compassionate approach that reaches and heart and the mind, and a relentless pursuit of excellence in everything I do. Specifically, to this position, I bring practical classroom management knowledge, a proven ability to maintain an organized and efficient learning environment, and experience in how to create effective rapport with students to help them achieve the learning goals of the class.
