A veterinary technician is able to perform basic animal care while under the supervision of a registered veterinarian, a veterinarian is able to practice on their own. The Department of Dairy and Animal Science had been established since 1887 (History of the Department of Dairy and Animal Science). Animal science is a topic that has held a high amount of interest, and will for many years to come.

Even though some colleges vary, there are mandatory classes that are required in order to pass pre-vet med and move on the actual vet science. The required courses include, Zoology/Biology, Physiology, microbiology, as well as credits in humanities, social sciences, and mathematics (What Education or Training Do You Need to Become a Veterinarian?). There is a variety of categories in the career field of veterinary medicine and benefiting the health and safety and animals. Private practices involve the care of livestock animals and 70% of the time small domesticated pets. In this field animals are treated individually with direct and full attention. There are different jobs when working as a primary practitioner which can include going into one particular field such as being a surgeon only or specializing in one species such as equine (UC DAVIS Veterinary Medicine). When a veterinarian works for a federal/regional agency, its considered working for the public health. This job covers the welfare and health of animals whose are domesticated as well wildlife populations and monitoring free range species. Here, inspections, disease control and research is conducted by experts.
