For years, experts in the healthcare field have sounded the alarm on the high demand for nurses nationwide. Based on projections by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the country will need additional 203,200 registered nurses from now through 2031 (https://www.mastersnursing.marquette.org). However, with the job being in high demand employers are offering a higher salary. March 13, 2020 covid-19 hit and hospitals were full, with shortages of RNs. When nurses were asked whether the pandemic has affected their salaries, 25% of all respondents reported increases in their wages. Median hourly wage rates for contract nurses increased slightly during the pandemic’s first year from $64 in 2019 to $71 in 2020 but shifted further upward to $103 in 2021 and $132 in the beginning of 2022 (https://fiercehealthcare.com). When covid-19 hit and nurses were needed they had to wear PPE. Personal protective equipment due to covid being an airborne illness.
