Daylight Saving Time Daylight saving time is the practice of turning clocks ahead one hour in the spring,and turning them back one hour in the fall. This practice is observed in the United States, except for Arizona and Hawaii. Proponents of daylight saving time believe that because it adds more sunlight hours to the standard day, it helps reduce crime, prevents accidents and allows us to do more in our day. Opponents believe that losing an hour of sleep affects our body’s internal clock negatively, and can possibly even lead to more serious health consequences. There is also evidence that daylight saving time does not conserve as much energy as originally thought. However, the benefits of daylight saving time cannot be denied, and far outweigh the liabilities.

Statistic show, pedestrians and drivers are much safer traveling in the daylight hours. As Source D’s graph shows, “Pedestrians experience fewer fatalities in the daylight, compared to the twilight to dark hours.” Additionally, drivers travel more for recreation with an extra hour of daylight during the day. It allows both pedestrians and drivers ample time to run errands, shop longer and get things done. Adding more daylight equals adding more fun, too. Another positive effect of daylight saving time relates to crime reduction, which is significantly reduced by having the extra daylight hours. Source C states, “people generally feel safer in the daylight, and many types of crime are believed to be influenced by lighting conditions. For example, more light in the evening decreases the opportunity for street crime against people returning home from work.” This benefit alone should provide enough evidence to ensure the continued practice of daylight saving
