One professional activity I would like to pursue is to be able to teach at the college level. I love to help people learn and to teach them about something they do not know about. I think my patience and love for psychology would help drive me to help the students in being able to understand the material and learn. Also, I could provide personal stories about working in the counseling profession, and help students understand what counseling is, and what you can do with a counseling degree. With regard to wanting to teach, I am not sure if I would rather teach undergraduates or graduate students because they both offer such different experiences. I would love for people to understand how using drugs or being surrounded in that environment may cause some problems for the kids growing up around this. If I could educate people on what we could do better in a child’s environment, it could help kids learn how to cope and deal with whatever is going on in their life. We need to help these kids because they have no control over what their parents are doing so they need someone to teach them basic life skills. From my experience, it seems like we need to do something within in our communities to help these kids learn the life skills they need to move through life. We need to provide support to resources and compassion to these kids who may not understand what is really going on with their parent. This means understanding one’s own pain and suffering then using compassion towards the self to help alleviate these feelings. For me being kind to myself is a hard thing to do and something I am working to improve on. One way I can start to cultivate a kind stance toward myself with regard to my physical self is when trying to stay on workout schedule if I miss a day give myself a break. By knowing everyone needs a break sometimes and that I can get back to working out the next day will reflect an understanding that people can get off track at times. To cultivate a kind stance mentally and emotionally is to realize that you are allowed to be upset about things in life that are not going your way but not let them affect how you feel about yourself. To be able to try to improve your self-compassion you could try to track it by how many negative thoughts you have in a day. Then when you do have a negative thought do you recognize it is negative and try to use some strategies of self-compassion. My understanding of the common humanity concept of self-compassion is that everyone at some point struggles with problems in their life (Neff, 2015). So this means that everyone suffers and is sad or upset about something at some point in everyone’s life. When we see other people struggle we are more than willing to comfort them and lending a
