In Dr. Louise Spear- Swerlings’ article, she stated that in Kindergarten through third grade, student should be taught five key elements for effective reading abilities, which are phonemic awareness, phonics knowledge, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Dr. Spear- Swerling, continued by saying phonic awareness is well develop in normally achieving reader by the end of first grade and by the end of third grade they should have acquired basic phonics knowledge. In addition to children excelling to become good readers, the instructions should be explicit and systematic, following a logical sequence of instruction. For instance, reading a decodable text that’s consisting of words with one syllable before advancing to an authentic text.
I was not sure about what to write for my journals, I did not want to write more than just my daily duties. I ended up thinking that writing about my perspectives, goals, objectives about my duties at work and the homeless shelter system. I started working at the Aguila INC Shelter, which is my place of work and internship. I started in November 10, 2015 as a Case Manager and it has been a challenging place for me. I did not have the experience, knowledge and I dare to say the educational background that may make me feel more comfortable to work with Homeless Families.
The journal article was published in MCN, The American Journal of Maternal/Child Nursing in 2009, which I accessed through the San Jose State University library database. According to the article the author, Nancy C. Sharts-Hopoko is a professor and the Director of the Doctoral Program of the College of Nursing at Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania. The article gives an overview of the controversies revolving around child-mandated vaccinations. The article addresses issues such as public access to vaccinations, concerns about individual rights, and concerns about adverse affects associated with vaccinations. This article is significant to my paper because is focus on the same issues I will be addressing.
Throughout her article, Brianna Strumm continuously puts forth insightful examples and scenarios that suggest a higher level of thinking. Strumm consistently refers back to Harper and his “ideological stance on ‘the family’, for example, [which] effectively encourages women to stay home, dis-incentivizes women engaging in paid employment, and positions them to depend on men.” (100, Strumm, 2015) In making this statement, Strumm offers an opportunity for myself as the reader to critically consider my own life and whether or not the conservative views on being a woman has affected me in a negative way. Personally, I was able to apply her statements to my mother’s circumstances as a single parent.
The age old question was posed by grandfather. “What do you plan on studying at school?” That question had always haunted me, mainly because the answer never seemed to impress anyone. I’ve always loved writing– it’s pretty much the only thing I’m passionate about. So to me, it only seemed logical to study creative writing.
