Smart. Ambitious. Hard-working. These are words that describe one of the most brilliant men in recent history, Bill Gates. Bill Gates is a man who made computers as big as they are now. Bill Gates has been interested in computers as a child and seemed destined to work with them. Today, he is seen as one of the most important people in the history of computers.
William Henry Gates III was born on October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington (Boyd, 1995) to Bill Gates Jr. and Mary Maxwell. He went to public schools until he was around 11 or 12 when he seemed bored with school and withdrawn from everyone his parents were worried about him so they moved him to the exclusive preparatory school Lakeside (Bill Gates Biography) where he met Paul Allen. Bill and Paul worked in the computer lab and when Gates was 15 he and Allen made a computer program for the city of Seattle to monitor the cities’ traffic patterns (Bill Gates Biography). A year after starting Harvard Bill learned from Paul Allen that the first personal computer was made by MITS, a firm in Albuquerque, New Mexico (Staff, 2010). Gates and Allen called MITS and told them they had software to run their computers and then Paul Allen went to their firm in New Mexico to show them the software. It worked perfectly and MITS offered Allen and Gates a job with them allowing Bill Gates to drop out of college and work with computer software. Gates and Allen worked with MITS until the company was sold and they co-formed Microsoft on April 14, 1974. They remained in Albuquerque, New Mexico until the end of 1978 when Gates moved the company to Bellevue, Washington east of Seattle (Bill Gates Biography).
