How teenagers are seen in movies and TV shows has changed significantly over past decades to what fits with the current stereotypes and standards. The first time that being a teenager was ‘popularised’ was during the 1950s, when youths aged 13-19 wanted to be unique, and unlike the older generations. They turned to rock and roll music, younger television shows, and movies to distance themselves from being involved with the culture of their parents. This compared to teenagers in the 80s and 90s when there was a large uprising of rebellion and angst.
Charlie Russell is a famous painter mostly known for his paintings on the Montana lifestyle. Some of his most famous paintings are of situations involving American Indians. But, how does he really depict them? Did he make it so they look and act real, or did he paint them as their stereotypes? Robert E. Lee “Bob” Ewell, an antagonist in “To Kill a Mockingbird” would look down upon the modern world. In the novel that took place during the 1930’s, many of the Maycomb citizens had a fixed mindset on African Americans, Bob Ewell being one of them. In fact, he projected the stereotypes of African Americans the most throughout the novel. Bob wouldn’t adapt or approve of our changing society and our acceptance to the different. Not only would Bob not approve of the world, but the world would not approve of Bob because his head is too set on the stereotypes and he doesn’t agree with equality whereas modern society does.

Unfortunately, humans use ethnicity and stereotypes to group people based on generalizations. If a person looks a certain way society has already determine how the person will behave based on the stereotypic group they’ve been already been placed in. Society has getting better with trying not to stereotype women, but after studying the movie Clueless, the stereotypes that were shown in the movie still exist today. However, people soon realize that when you start to eat bananas that have more spots and are imperfect they turn out to be sweeter and better. This connects to stereotypes because people who follow stereotyped will always eat the perfect bananas; however, people who choose to look through another perspective can realize that the imperfect bananas are better. This connects to The Outsiders because Ponyboy realizes this after he talks with two Socs, kids from a rival group named Randy and Cherry. In The Outsiders, S.E Hinton presents the idea that teenagers can break through stereotypes if they look at life through another perspective; as shown in the book when Ponyboy starts to talk to Cherry and Randy and realizes the stereotypes about them are false.
